choir alumni harlem ensemble. they'll be sir nading us all morning. good morning, america. two days until christmas, "gma" never sounded so good. >> those guys are great. you can see ron tapping. they do a mean "feliz navidad." great to have them with us this morning. also this morning, we are going to take a look at some fancy high, high-end christmas gifts affordable only for people who may have recently won the lottery. a jet pack, $100,000. this guy drives it well. i got a chance to test drive it, and that's what happened. yeah, yeah. it didn't go so wellment >> it looks like fun when he was. with you, dan -- >> as it turns out it's tricky to use. >> yeah. >> the gift that keeps on giving. >> perhaps we shouldn't be running that story. also this morning, keep a close eye on those gifts you do buy. unfortunately, 'tis the season for christmas crimes, as well. and we'll show you some bad guys caught on tape red handed stealing people's presents.

that's coming up next. but we're going to start here this half hour with what is shaping up to be the big story on christmas and the days of a. severe weather, it could strand many of the 93 million americans who travel for the holidays. >> that's right, not one but two huge storms taking shape ready to strike right after you open your presents. meteorologist ginger zee is here with the details. good morning, ginger. >> good morning, guys. it is going to be an interesting week. active weather on the way that starts with this storm, christmas eve, light snow from eastern michigan into parts of northern ohio into parts of new york even to boston so will you have a white christmas? i think i'll see a flake or two mixing in on the back side of those cities on the east coast. it's not going to be that big of a storm. the big one has already started and brought a lot of rain bringing accidents in san jose, california. they had almost a half inch, san francisco, almost an inch, not good on the roadways there and talk about bad roads, look at the next part here in the sierras. by the time this thing is done with them, five to even six feet of snow, so

great for skiers, horrible as it's turned into a parking lot on some of their highways. it'll cross over and here's where it gets interesting. earlier i said to dan and bianna, i said, geez, oh, pete. i got it a good old midwestern -- eastern oklahoma, some are over a foot of snow on christmas eve and christmas day. then you look into, and that's mostly christmas day, but watch this. as it moves, wednesday, ice up in the new england rain here and it exits thursday into friday but that's when all the people are traveling. so we will keep an eye on it and more on the nation's weather coming up. >> ginger, i know you're excited about the weather when you say geez, oh, pete. i had to look it up online. it translates roughly into wow. >> that's it. >> learning about my midwest

vernacular. on to the shopping front. we are genuinely down to the wire. two days left and this big question, where is the best place to shop? abc's rachel smith is on the front lines joining us with advice. good morning to you. >> reporter: oh, yes, on the front lines indeed, dan, good morning, everyone. it's the final stretch, two days until christmas. if you're a last-minute shopper, of course, you know you're not alone. a reported 40% of americans are still checking off items on their christmas list. ♪ the clock is ticking. >> we have a lot of time. >> reporter: some, a bit in denial. most scrambling excluding these little ones. there are still many options, panicking, not one of them. option number one, hit up a local small business. they may be more convenient and could turn out to be your secret weapon. >> i had a customer call me up a couple of weeks ago. i said no, i got it for her. she came in, i wrapped it up and

she was on her way. >> reporter: option two, large chain stores. this late in the game they may just save the day with round the clock hours and seemingly endless inventory. what are the benefits of going to a store like toys "r" us. >> you get everything. everything is in there. all the toys you could possibly want. >> reporter: but the biggest benefits last-minute price slashing. >> they have discounts because they don't want to get stuck with this excess inventory. >> reporter: megaretailers mean megaopportunities to get in on the latest deals with shopping your phone. >> shopkick will send you coupons and discouints when you're approaching the store. >> reporter: if you've reached your limit, hit the web, a gift card, e-book or online subscription is always the safe bet.

if all else fails -- >> you can pull the whole i left my gift at home and wait until december 2>> reporter: okay, sot exactly in the spirit of christmas, although the very best deals are the days after christmas. but perhaps that's shopping better left for yourself. bianna? >> rachel, news you can use and ron is writing down some of those websites, as well. thanks, rachel. well, while americans are buying their gifts, there are some real-life grinches coming up with creative ways to steal them. but, unfortunately, for them they're being caught on the tape and watched by millions. here's abc's mark greenblatt. >> reporter: al alverson's security cams ra in houston solved the missing mystery of the ipad mini. there's the fedex guy delivering it just in time. here comes the grinch dressed in brown. he delivers his own package only to come back and take that ipad mini for himself. >> i was shocked, you know, and i think i said, oh, my god, it's the u.p.s. guy. i thought this is exactly like the grinch. >> reporter: alverson said

u.p.s. replaced the ipad and fired the driver, but not until the video went on the internet. >> i didn't hear from anybody till 8:30 the next morning. u.p.s. security here in houston and they said, we saw your video on youtube. >> reporter: in okay city, a team of grinches worked together casing this house. they break down the door and once inside the unthinkable, they head right to the christmas tree and began unwrapping presents before knocking the tree over on their way out. and when a little girl came home with her family, christmas was gone. in texas, the troubling trend of thefts continues. jennifer velez's christmas gifts for her toddler are dropped off safe and sound, but then a black dodge charger pulls up and out comes this woman who helps herself with the presents. >> that blows my mind. that you could be that bold. >> reporter: she goes back for the big package, too, but can't fit it in her car and

undeterred, she adjusts her seat in broad daylight to make room for the gift. the guy who had his ipad mini stolen, he's convinced he never would have received another one if he had not installed security cameras to prove what happened. police recommend using and, by the way, police recommend using electronic tracking services now if you're expecting an expensive gift and, and, dan, bianna, these days you can get alerted right on your phone the minute one of these things arrives. >> appreciate it. >> overnight headlines with ron "feliz navidad" claiborne. >> good morning, dan, bianna, blatt -- you know, that's his nickname. new evidence that south korea says reveals north korea's true intentions behind its rocket launches. the scientist investigating debris say they found evidence suggesting military purposes as well as technological ties with iran. the rocket launched a satellite

into orbit but experts say it was a test for a missile that can carry a warhead as far as the west coast of the u.s. british authorities are considering criminal charges over that prank call to the cambridge hospital. scotland law submitted one about the hoax. made by two australian radio deejays. they canceled them after the nurse who transferred the call to kate middleton's room committed suicide. pope benedict delivered a christmas present to his former butler. he pardoned paolo gabriele. he had been sentenced to 18 months in prisons, documents exposed embarrassing things inside the vatican. allegations of corruption and more. and talking about the vatican visitors, they will have to be scrubbed before they can visit the cyst seen chapel. they will be vacuum cleaned and the dust is damaging to the paintings.

there will be a special carpet that cleans shoes and suction vents that pull dust from clothing. the 5 million who visit it every year are being blamed for layers of grime on the masterpiece so metal detectors and -- then you get hosed down before you can go in. >> all right, ron, thank you. the president and members of congress are all taking time off for the holidays even as the clock continues to run down, just nine days before we go over that fiscal cliff and everybody's taxes go up. i'm sure a lot of us feel they shouldn't be taking time off. >> that's right. there's not a lot to celebrate now. let's bring in george stephanopoulos. great to see you, george. things are coming down to the wire. what are the odds they can come up with a deal especially republicans can't agree. >> there's not going to be a big deal. that's just not happening. those talks completely collapsed this week and ended once and for all when house speaker john boehner couldn't even pass his backup plan in the house on thursday. the only possibility right now would be some kind of a very small -- some measure that would just extend the tax cuts for everyone earning under $250,000. it should be a lot of protection

for a lot of people, but even that is going to be difficult. you get it only if there's a promise not to filibuster that measure in the senate and the house speaker agrees to take it up. both of those questions are very open right now. >> a lot of open questions and high stakes for a lot of people. let me ask you about another big issue in washington right now. in this toxic environment any chance that the president can make any headway on his desire to change the laws around guns? >> it's another big question. you saw what happened on friday. the nra, the national rifle association came out with their first response to the newtown tragedy and their bottom line, there shouldn't be any new gun control. you heard wayne lapierre say the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun so they're staking their claim there, and on the other hand, you see some prominent nra members came out

like senator joe manchin and wants tolimit magazine clips. i believe something will come out. the key is speed and that's why the president has asked vice president biden to come back with his recommendations before the end of january. >> the trick is given how partisan things are, will that happen? all right, george, merry christmas, great to he have you. and be sure to join george when his guests include asa hutchinson, the head of the nra nationally announced new school shield program. >> big show for george this morning. moving on now while it's not as dire as the whole fiscal cliff situation, a lot are upset at the game show "wheel of fortune." it has to do with this contestant. she guessed the right words but she was told she lost anyway. abc's john muller is on the story. >> reporter: good morning, dan. this is the game show version of football fan outrage over a referee's blown call and in this case, "wheel of fortune" fans saying the judges blew it big time. we hear from the woman robbed because of her pronunciation and southern accent. >> 300. >> "s." >> yeah, four of them. >> all right.

>> reporter: she was on a roll cruise ing her way towards thousands on "wheel of fortune." >> "n." >> three ns. >> reporter: renee durette can taste victory. she's got the winning answer. >> i'd like to solve. >> yep. >> seven swans a swimmin'. >> yeah, that's -- >> reporter: so so she thought. even hose pat sajak has to backtrack. listen again as she pronounces it. >> seven swans a swimmin'. >> yeah, that's not the -- >> that's kind of how i speak, you know, being from florida and i had asked for the "g," so i knew it was there. >> reporter: judges said the answer violated the rules because it was spoken in vernacular. the twitterverse lit up with outrage. "wheel of fortune" hates southerners. "wheel of fortune" game show penalized her for not pronouncing the "g."

>> if you start to swing the song, it's seven swans a swimmin'. >> do you know what happened there? >> no. >> definitely spun the tone of the show and the moments that i thought i had and i lost it and then it wound up costing me the kind of the show. >> reporter: well, the judges may be grinches, they didn't steal her christmas spirit. even if she sings it seven swans a swimmin'. >> i had an absolute amazing experience, just to where i've been and what i've done and what kind of internet footprint i have. such a whirlwind i feel like i should be out, you know, whipping off a big hat. >> we reached out to the show's producers and haven't received any response. other game shows have made controversial rulings before and invited guests back on. who knows. there's a lot hoping renee gets

a do-over. >> myself included. she was robbed. >> nice lady. i agree. >> all right, john, thank you. time for weather and over to ginger. >> the other part of that big storm i didn't get to talk about was the severe weather. on christmas day you could have isolated tornadoes and damaging winds here along the gulf. that's something i wanted to note. speaking of the gulf and all the way down into florida, brrr, is it cold this morning. look at some of the plants there in florida being protected because of the freeze warnings that were on from yesterday through today and we're already seeing that again this morning. it's 40, orlando. 29, jacksonville. all that pink would continue freeze warnings. it's going to get a warmer for a few days. new storm that sweeps through cold air again. speaking of cold, sunny cold from the dakotas there through minneapolis at 12. chicago, 23. that's the big picture. let's get a check a little closer to home.

favorites and you vote on which one is the best. that's all coming up shortly. but first we've got this infuriating story of a dental assistant in iowa who whose boss fired her because she's too attractive. no one has accused of her flirting on the job, but her only crime, looking too good. wait till you hear how a court ruled. tanya rivero is here. >> even her boss said she did nothing wrong and was the best dental assistant he's ever had but the court said her firing was unfair but ultimately decided it wasn't illegal and the decision left many working women outraged and many employment lawyers confounded. after ten years at a job she loved, melissa nelson was fired because her boss said she was too much of a temptation and a threat to his marriage. on friday, the all male iowa supreme court unanimously agreed with dentist james knight ruling employers can fire employees they see as an irresistible attraction. >> i'm devastated. i really am. >> reporter: the 32-year-old

married mother of two says she saw her employer as a father figure and was shocked when dr. knight alleged ly confessed he couldn't be trusted around her. >> i was very surprised after working so many years side by side, i didn't have any idea that that would have crossed his mind. >> reporter: but according to court documents, knight admits he referenced nelson's infrequent sex life saying that's like having a lamborghini in the garage and never driving it but when knight was busted by his wife sending text messages to nelson, it was she who demanded the dental assistant be fired. nelson sued for gender discrimination arguing if she was a man she'd still have her job. >> i think that's absurd. i think the women in iowa should start going to work in burqas for fear their boss might find them sexually attractive and terminate them. >> reporter: dr. knight's lawyer gave abc news this statement,

"she was not terminated because of her her gender but to preserve the best interests of his marriage." >> i think it's sending a message men can do whatever they want in the workforce. >> now, the court did chastise dr. knight for what he did and the ungenerous severance of one month's pay after ten years of work. but that's the extent of it. he's off the hook and nelson has no more chances. >> you pointed out that all of these justices are male. >> yeah, and it was a unanimous decision. >> you know, i usually don't throw my opinion in but this is so wrong. i mean, sets a bad precedent. it's just bad. >> yeah. >> all right, tanya. okay. >> ron, with the other headlines. shaking your head. >> that is an odd one. good morning, everyone. in the news -- other news with just two days until christmas day most major stores are staying open around the clock. an estimated 40% of americans -- i'm one of them -- still have items left on their shopping

holiday hopping list. as a matter of fact, yes. meanwhile, former president george h.w. bush will spend christmas day in the hospital recovering from a cough related to bronchitis. doctors will not discharge him until he is fully recovered. and new york jets quarterback tim tebow may be going home next season. espn is reporting that it is virtually certain that tebow will join his hometown jacksonville jaguars. he played college football, of course, nearby at the university of florida, the gators. and finally, wildlife officials in utah came to the rescue of a deer trapped on ice. an officer used a row boat to reel in the young buck in case the thin ice cracked. the deer is expected to make a full recovery, we believe. time now for the weather and ginger zee. >> i've got a christmas story. one dad in texas, plano, texas, that is, kids wanted snow, and he said we're not going to get it, didn't think, he would, so he made it for the kids and, of course, all the
